1950's Italian Swivel Chair attributed to Osvaldo Borsani

1950's Italian Swivel Chair attributed to Osvaldo Borsani

This is a rare early version of the swivel chair from the 1950's. It is still very comfortable and covered in the fashionable blue leatherette of that period. The legs and frame are made from solid iron with screws for adjusting the height for uneven floors.  From the shape of the curved back, exaggerated winged arm, and the use of solid iron legs, the chair appears to be an office version of the P36 chair designed for Techno by Osvaldo Borsani in the early 50's.  The inspiration, certainly from the 1940's was the design that was submitted for the Museum of Modern Art's prize for Organic Design in Home furnishings by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen in 1940.  Their relaxation chair design inspired many of the ergonomic and iconic chairs of the mid-century.
